Dogs live for the moment. Have you ever wondered what they are thinking at that moment? Here's their chance to tell us. Send doggie thoughts to odie@odiedog.com
QUACKERS AND ME as told by Sidney Mom got a new duck yesterday and we just got back from the duck pen. Mom had to make sure the new duck was comfortable in his new home. She already had three Mallard ducks from a friend she pet sits for. They were always pecking at the other ducks so Mom took them in. She already has them all spoiled. She has to keep the new white duck (Quackers) separated from the other three because they already decided to gang up and peck on him/her (don't know it's gender yet). She does this with my exercise pen we use when we go to dog competitions. This way they can see each other and Quackers isn't alone. She bought another wading pool so both sides have a pool. She even has steps by the pool so it is easy for them to climb in. She has steps inside the pool too so they can easily get out too. I personally don't think Quackers would have any problems defending himself from the other ducks. While Mom was tending to Quackers she didn't see me come in the pen. She doesn't worry about me being around because I have never tried to hurt any of the ducks before. Anyway, Quackers was in the pool and I stuck my snout up to him and he pecked me!! I was so surprised I jumped back and Quackers got out of the pool and started waggling toward me. I'm not used to being chased by a duck. I usually herd ducks. Well, I'm not about to be embarrassed by a duck. So I turned around and the duck didn't turn around and run. I went into a play bow and he quacked and darted his beak at me. I was having fun. Mom was laughing so hard tears were rolling down her checks. She told Daddy that it was neat that Sidney (that's me) and a duck could play together. Wish people could except something different and get along.
ICE CREAM TIME as told by Rosco
I LOVE TO HERD by Sidney My Mom likes doing things with me and my older brother beagle, Rosco but I like doing more things than him. Mom trains us both agility at home and takes me to herding lessons at a ranch. She also takes me to agility practice at a park but I love herding by far. The first time I saw the sheep was at an instinct test which they now call a capability test. That was really fun because I'm not expected to know anything yet. What they test for is if I'm interested in the livestock. I was super interested. Because I'm not trained for herding, I chased those sheep around the arena and didn't even get in trouble. Now I'm expected to follow some commands but every once in a while I sneak a chase in. What is neat about herding is the trust that is developing between Mom and me. We have to have a bond and confidence between us. Herding is a connection between me and Mom and I love it. The first few lessons, we were learning quite a bit but I wanted to do things my way and I was positive in my mind that Mom had no idea what she was doing. I still don't think she does but I've learned to be patient with her. She's starting to catch on. She even knows the difference between sheep and goats now. Anyway, now that I've learned to be patient with her we are getting better at this herding stuff. We even went to a beginning trial and Mom was so proud of our performance and my Dad was also really proud. He even bragged about me at his work place. I highly recommend this to all you herding breeds. This is a great way to get a super close bond with your Mom and Dad.
I WENT HERDING told by Rosco Mom feels so guilty about doing so much with Sidney that she decided to take me with Sid and her to the ranch where they train and practice herding. She parked close to the coral and tied me to a tree so I could watch. Actually, I think she just wanted to keep an eye on me. I got to admit I wasn't real happy about not being able to participate. I'm not just the watching type. I made it known by doing a lot of whining. Mom practiced about ten minutes with Sidney. Got to admit, he is looking good. When she came out of the coral, I heard her ask her trainer, Joe, if it would be OK to let me try this herding stuff. Joe said why not but to be cautious and leave my long leash on. IT WAS GREAT!!!
