MONSTER BALLOON

Rosco, Sidney, Babers and I always go for a morning walk around my house.  Rosco usually casually walks with his nose to the ground without a care in the world.  He doesn't get to excited about anything and very rarely barks. On this particular morning, he started barking and naturally I looked to see what he was barking at.  His snout was up toward the sky and an orange hot-air balloon was floating across the sky.  Now this was a monster to him and he growled, ran toward the fence line and was ready for it when if it came to close.  Sidney was running back and forth barking and pretending the whole time he knew what was going on.  I don't think he ever saw the balloon.  After about five minutes, Rosco got bored with watching this monster and his nose went back to the ground.

DUCK SMELL

I finally got some ducks to practice herding with Sidney.  I try to practice every morning.  While Sidney and I are practicing, Rosco stays in the smaller fenced area inside the big fenced area.  The whole time Sidney and I are practicing our herding techniques, Rosco is watching and whining to let him show us how it is suppose to be done.  After Sidney and I are done, I put the ducks back in their 12x12 pen and then let Rosco out of the little yard.  He dashes around the fence straight to the bigger fence line to smell the ground where the ducks have been herded and then to the pen.  The whole time is tail is straight up and his nose couldn't get any closer to the ground.

SURPRISE

I finally let Rosco in the duck pen to see what he does, of course, under close supervision.  The heck with the ducks.  All he wanted to do is roll around in the bedding.  After a little rolling around, Rosco decided to check out the duck house which is an igloo dog house.  The ducks were on the other side of the pen.  Sidney, who was on the outside of the pen came around to the side where the ducks were.  The ducks didn't know Rosco went into their house and proceeded to go into their house as Rosco was coming out.  I can't even describe how hilarious it was to see the surprise look on Rosco and the ducks.  Rosco hit his head on the entrance and the ducks actually jumped backwards too.

DIGGING

I think dogs should be allowed to be dogs with as few human rules as possible a few times a week if not more.  One of the things I do to make this possible is take them to a desert field across the street from where I live.  This desert field doesn't have a hardly any cacti but does have quite a few bushes.  There also lives quite a few ground squirrel who dig holes under the bushes and through out the field.  My furry kids love sticking their noses in the holes to smell their scent.  The ground squirrels have been very active lately so their scent is strong.  Not only do the kids stick their noses in the holes, they now keep their front toe nails trimmed from digging in the hard clay ground making the holes bigger.

Rosco is a beagle and he sometimes digs to where half his body is in the hole.  When he gets tired his rear is already down and he is in a sit position so all he has to do is quit digging for a minute.  There are times when branches from the bushes get in the way of the dig but no problem.  Both Sidney or Rosco grab hold of the branch and pull until it breaks off.  If it doesn't break off, they'll give it a dirty look and approach the hole from a different angle.

Sometimes Sidney will find a hole with a good scent and Rosco will find one right behind him.  As Rosco is digging, the dirt Sidney is digging out of his hole fills the hole Rosco is working on.  Rosco just moves those paws of his faster so his hole still gets bigger but very slowly.  Sometimes the kids are at angles from each other and one kid is getting awfully dirty from the flying dirt from the other furry child.  There has been a time where I thought little Rosco was going to be buried by Sidney.  Since Sidney is an Australian Shepherd, he is a little big for Rosco to bury but Rosco can sure get him dirty.

It is such a joy to watch my furry children enjoying being dogs.
