ICE CREAM

Every evening my husband had a bowl of ice cream or an ice cream bar. This was a ritual. At that time, I had three dogs, Odie, Babers and Trigger. My husband didn't always have the ice cream at the same time but these dogs knew when he was having it. They would all sit around his legs and patiently wait till he was almost done.
First Odie would get a lick, then Trigger, then Babers. After a couple licks by each dog, Odie would finish it off.

THE EATING SNOWDRIFT
Odie was born in Montana and we lived in at trailer about a block away from our mailbox. Every day we would walk to the mail box no matter what the weather was like. Montana got quite a bit of snow but we would walk to the mailbox anyway on those days.
One day after it had snowed quite a bit, Odie and I started walking for the mail. All of a sudden there was no Odie but a leash that went into a snowdrift. In a few seconds a small black nose was visible and then out popped a beagle dog. How dare snow eat Odie up. Odie turned to look at the hole he had just emerged from and gave it a beagle bay "Don't ever eat me again". The look was priceless.

HOT WHEELS
One of Odie's favorite games was chasing and baying at miniature hot wheel vehicles. My husband or I would roll one of these vehicles around on the floor or coffee table and Odie would chase after it all the while doing a beagle bay. Sometimes he would jump from the couch onto the coffee table and slide pass the vehicle off the table and give us a look like "you didn't see that".
After awhile we would let Odie catch the vehicle and then the chase turned around. He would have the vehicle in his snout, look at us and then trot off when we started to chase him. When we caught him, that signified the game was over.

CHRISTMAS PRESENT GUARDING DUTIES
I'm not sure how Odie knew but he knew the difference when my husband or I put presents under the tree or we were about to take a present from under the tree. He also knew when it was Christmas Eve. It is the tradition in my family to open our presents then and go to relatives homes Christmas morning.

Odie assigned
himself the present guard. Somehow he knew when we were putting a present
under the tree. If we wanted to take a
present away from the tree he would give you a warning with a glare and a Beagle
bay. If we were putting a present under the tree, he had no problem
as long as
he got to sniff the present as soon as it was
there.
On Christmas Eve, he let us get the presents from under the tree without the stare and Beagle bay and even helped us unwrap them. Of course, most the presents were his. He had no problem letting his adopted sister Beagle (Babers) and later another adopted sister beagle (Trigger) have their presents either, has long has he inspected them and if the present involved food they shared.
